Our lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms behind neuron-glia interactions in the hypothalamus that regulate energy balance. We study these processes at the levels of intercellular communication, intracellular metabolism, and organelle function. Recently, we've found that under hypercaloric conditions, hypothalamic microglia in the arcuate nucleus adopt a proinflammatory state, affecting neuronal networks that control energy homeostasis. We're investigating how neurotransmission impacts glial function and how microglia adjust their phagocytic and inflammatory responses in different pathological conditions. For translational research, we use postmortem brain tissue from individuals with obesity, diabetes, or Prader-Willi Syndrome. By analyzing gene and protein expression, we aim to link our findings to potential clinical applications.
